Depending on the car I’m a purist, or a “ few but tasteful” mods guy. Then I bought a 75' BMW hotrod that has left only the rear seat unmodified, and it really expanded my horizons. I thought to myself “fuck, I might not even like this car in it’s stock form.” I highly doubt that, but the the thought crossed my mind.

Anyway, my former self wouldn’t think of modding up my brand new car, but here I am. Less than two weeks, badges are off, it’s tinted, my silver “Bumperdillo” arrives tomorrow to add back a little contrast to the rear of the car after removing all of the badges. It will also protect against Mastiff and Boxer paws of which there are 8 in my house.

Sans tint for reference

The thing on the top of the back bumper is a “Bumperdillo”

I’ve also got an appointment at the end of next month at Smith VW (an APR VW dealer) to do the warranty covered stage 1 tune. I just have to slap 2300 miles on the car before then (break in).

I’m still on the fence about the CDV delete. Were doing that on my pal’s MK6 TDI this weekend, so I will see how it feels before I go for it.

After the tune I’ll likely be done for a while. I think

If they’re pretty good from the factory, then there really is no need for mods. I don’t have a massive desire to do anything to the M3, but the 3 really could use a few things that would make it a bit better.

That looks pretty good.  What does the tune do?

Yep the only thing I did to the M3 was add a short throw shifter, selector rod, and bushings. I didn’t do anything to the E90 either.

Pumps the power/torque from 170/199 to 234/273.

That came out nice. Perhaps it is a product of having spent almost all of my life in hot, high-altitude places where the sun is an oppressive force of radiation melting your soul, but untinted windows almost give me sunburn just thinking about them. Your interior thanks you, too.

I don’t really consider a trip through the factory accessory catalog “mods. ”  I think of them more like options that the car mistakenly left the factory without, especially on something like the bumperdillo.

Thanks! This is actually the first car (of my own) that I have had tinted. It’s mainly for the baby, but the first day I had the car at work it was really hot and sunny and I left the gigantic sunroof shade open. It took the AC longer to get going than it does in my Ranger that day. I immediately thought, tint soon and good tint.

I agree on the factory accessories. My car came with everything except the bumperdillo! I would have happily traded the cargo net for it.

Intercooler if you're doing a tune.  Turbo discharge temps go nuts with a tune.  Yes, they compensate for it, but the performance isn't as consistent.

A tune that doesn’t void the warranty? ? I would like to know more

The guy at Smith VW mentioned that too. He didn’t really say why but that makes perfect sense.

It’s a $600 tune. The extra $400 is for the warranty.

That looks great. I need to get tint on the 4Runner, although most likely just the front windows to match the privacy glass.

The 4Runner is the first new vehicle I’ve purchased that I knew I was going to mod when I bought it. I wanted an Off Road or Pro, but my wife wanted the third row which isn’t available in either. Not sure what I’ll do next, but I’m sure I’ll keep tinkering a little bit.

Wow, I’ve heard of APR but I didn’t know about the warranty. T hat sounds like a pretty good deal. I’ d be tempted to get one for my GTI, but the stock clutch supposedly can’t take it.

On the other hand I wish dealers wouldn’t be so hasty about applying dealer installed options to every new car that comes in. The bumperdillo is a dealer installed option on the 2019 Corolla hatch, one that I don’t want (a giant black piece of plastic stands out big-time on a bright blue car). It seems like 95% of them have had it installed before the car even gets listed. Just leave the damn thing in the box and then ask the customer if they want it installed. At the very least don’t put it on everything that comes in the door.

/Rant over

Thanks. It really needed it, that car gets so hot!

I’d eventually like  electronically adjustable dampers, but the Bilstein kit is 2k and I’d like to get through a winter before I decide to lower a car that was meant to sit higher, even if just slightly.

Yea there is a lot of riff raff about the clutch I have heard it both ways. I’m not worried about it the way I drive.

Looks sharp with the tint!

I lowered my old V70 XC, but only slightly, on factory S60 AWD springs. That little bit looked sooo good, to me at least. I can’t comment on the ride difference, as  the suspension was worn and due for a refresh when I did it.

Hah, that is also how I read it every time . Honestly the Mastiff won’t even fit in the Alltrack. I mean she does with two seats down, but she can’t sit or stand, haha.

Yea I’d only be lowering 2cm. The ride difference is why I want the adjustables . If it was just me all of the time I wouldn’t care if it rode like the 02. It was so nice on my E90 M3 and S3 to be able to put it in comfort mode when the family is in the car.

Actually, I can appreciate that. My trip through the Ford accessory catalog on my F-150 was certainly pretty specific. I’m not sure why the bumperdillos aren’t on most cars from the factory. I understand the aesthetic considerations, but a nything with a painted lip right below the trunk opening is going to get scratched up with use. Even with trying to be super careful with the M ustang in the household, it has still accumulated some scratches on the bumper from loading stuff in and out of trunk over 2 or 3 years.

I wish Cobb would do something like this for Subarus. They’re almost as common as vape pens in WRXs and STIs.

That’s why they should just leave it in the box and offer installation. If the customer wants the bumperdillo installed they just roll the car into the service bay, pull the bumperdillo out of the box in the trunk of the car, install it, and then off the customer goes. If the customer doesn’t want he bumperdillo they either leave it in the box in the trunk and the customer leaves with a new in box bumperdillo or they remove the bumperdillo from the options list and then take the new in box bumperdillo and assign it to a different car that wasn’t originally optioned as a bumperdillo car.

Agree, but those access ports are really good. There are about a half dozen WRXs and STis in my circle. A ll but one is at least running some kind of modified map via AccessPort. None have had any real trouble. One guy burnt up his clutch way early, but he’s the worst driver with the most mods so we all saw that coming.

I had an 04 STi in 06 and left it stock, because those cars are plenty serious bone stock.

My favorite one was an 07' STi limited. Intake, turboback, injectors, and an intercooler. He could change the maps on the accessport but I think he had someone “pro tune” it and load that map into the accessport. This car was a murder weapon. It looked almost like a standard impreza of that era but was so fast that I could not help let out a deep and long cackle every time I mashed on the gas.

A good tint always looks good. I mean, look at just about any press photo of any car.

I never did my E46 wagon but only because I couldn’t get a recommendation from anyone on a good place near enough to me to make it worth it. Other priorities won out. My XC70 I’m driving now was factory tinted, yay.
